Power Struggle: MP Mbai Faces Kitui Home Disconnection Amidst Kitengela Power Cut

Nimrod Mbai, the Member of Parliament for Kitui East, is feeling the heat after the electricity was cut off to his rural home in the Kitui, Zombie area.
John Wanyoike, the regional manager for Kenya Power, confirmed that there was a power outage by stating that the member of parliament had not been paying his power bills.

This comes after the electricity supply to the member of parliament’s home in Kitengela was cut off due to an alleged illegal connection.

The lawmaker was taken into custody on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a Kenya Power employee, but he was later granted bail by the police in the amount of Ksh 50,000 and allowed to go free pending his arraignment on July 11th.

On Wednesday, the office of the District Public Prosecutor (DPP) in Kajiado dismissed the charges that had been brought against Mbai, stating that they did not meet the requirements for a case to be taken to court.

On July 11th, Mbai will have another court appearance to face the charges of assault, theft of electricity, and illegal connection of electricity.

The company that distributes electricity issued a statement condemning the incident, stating that any form of intimidation directed toward its employees is unacceptable and should not be tolerated.

Protests were held in Kitengela, Kenya, early on Wednesday morning by Kenya Power union leaders in response to an alleged assault on one of their fellow workers.

“While working to weed the network of these illegal and dangerous connections, we regrettably note an emerging trend of violent attacks against our staff,” MD Kenya Power Eng. Joseph Siror said. “While we are working to weed the network of these illegal and dangerous connections,”

The power company further asserted that the organization will not ease up on its push to weed out individuals who are erecting illegal and dangerous power connections that continue to paralyze the quality of the power supply, which ultimately leads to huge losses for the company.
