Police: Where’s our allowances for covering anti-state protests?

During the antigovernment demonstrations, police officers in the Nyanza region have questioned the whereabouts of their allowances.

Since July, the officers have not received the allowances for covering protests, and they want Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome to take swift action.

Instead of allowances, they were handed bread, cooked green grams, rice, and black tea, according to the officers.

They stated that each officer who covered the demonstrations would receive approximately Sh5,000.

โ€œWe were given a form to sign that we have received food. You were to sign even if you are not eating because we must obey orders from our seniors,โ€ an officer said.

The officers have also urged President William Ruto, as part of his renewed efforts to combat corruption, to demand answers and take stern action regarding this matter.

They suggested that the president of state should intervene to stop their commanders from intimidating them whenever they request their allowances.

โ€œWe have been serving the country as required. All we are asking for as dedicated and diligent officers is the whereabouts of our money. We want what rightfully belongs to us,โ€ an officer said.

When contacted, the regional police superintendent of Nyanza, Mannase Musyoka, declined to comment.

“You have the guts to call me ‘wakati mnatuchafua kwa magazeti’ over police transfers,” Musyoka said before he hung up. Further, he did not respond to text messages, including WhatsApp.

The officers covering the protests came from Kisumu, Kisii, Migori, Nyamira, Siaya, and Homa Bay. The demonstrations in the region resulted in deaths, robbery, and property destruction.
