International Justice Mission-Kenya (IJM-Kenya) represented the victim in court.

Tuesday, a police officer assigned to the headquarters of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation was found guilty of murdering a businessman and politician in Limuru six years ago.

Justice Mary Kasango found Edward Moi Munjalu guilty and sentenced him to 30 years in prison for the murder of William Mwangi Kimani on August 27, 2017, at Club U-Turn in Limuru Town.

Kimani, a building and construction engineer, was shot and killed at dawn after he refused to buy the police officer alcohol, causing the club bouncers to intervene and eject him (Munjalu) from the premises.

According to evidence presented in court, the officer approached Kimani’s vehicle as he reversed out of the parking lot and fired seven shots through the front passenger window, instantly killing him.

In her ruling, Justice Kasango stated that Munjalu violated the law by shooting and killing Kimani.

The judge stated that he used excessive force despite not being in danger.

“Given Edward’s conviction for murder and the factors discussed above, the appropriate sentence is thirty years in prison,” the judge stated.

14 witnesses for the prosecution testified against Munjalu, including the police officers who arrested him.

In his defense, Munjalu provided a sworn statement but did not call any witnesses.

The judge also stated that Munjalu had gone to the club to have fun. Just like any other reveler, and that there was no justification for his death.

“There is no doubt that the shooting was committed by a serving police officer. Who was supposed to protect him,” said Justice Kasango.

The judge stated that the murder conviction and sentence should serve as a deterrent.

“In calculating Edward Munjalu’s sentence. The prison authority shall give him credit for the three years and ten months he has spent in custody. Awaiting the conclusion of his trial,” she added.

International Justice Mission-Kenya (IJM-Kenya) represented the victim in court.

Following the verdict and ensuing sentence. IJM Kenya Country Director Benson Shamala stated that the officer’s conviction is a major step forward. In holding errant police officers accountable for using excessive force against unarmed citizens.

Shamala stated that it is unfortunate that police officers tasked with protecting citizens abuse their authority and cause the death of innocent people.

This conviction is further evidence that the general public can depend on our criminal justice system to protect them.

“IJM remains committed to holding police accountable and collaborating with those in charge of police oversight. Shamala stated that law enforcement officers must always provide protection and never harm innocent citizens.
