Police Fire Shots Amid Orengo & Deputy Supporter Clash

On Saturday, May 13, police officers in Siaya were forced to shoot into the air and launch teargas canisters to disperse supporters of Governor James Orengo and Deputy Governor William Oduol.

Initial reports indicate that law enforcement officers were forced to intervene after a confrontation between supporters of the two legislators turned violent.

It was not immediately determined whether or not any of their supporters were injured during the confrontation. In addition, the disagreement’s root cause remained unknown at the time of publication.

Orengo and his deputy met at the funeral of a member of the Siaya County Assembly.

Before their meeting, Orengo and Oduol had divergent views on county administration.

In response to their disagreement, three activists petitioned the Milimani High Court in Nairobi for guidance.

In their petition, the activists charged Governor Orengo with sabotaging Oduol.

However, a judge at the Milimani Law Courts, Justice Hedwiq Ong’udi, transferred the case back to the Siaya High Court because it had jurisdiction over the matter.

“After reviewing the pleadings, I have determined that the complaint is against the Siaya County governor and the Siaya County government,” Ong’udi stated.

“There is a High Court in the county of Siaya that should hear the case.” I, therefore, transfer the case to the Siaya High Court for consideration and hearing. He added that the file would be presented to the presiding judge for further instructions.

On April 27, Oduol bemoaned his exclusion from a Cabinet meeting presided over by Governor Orengo.

He was scheduled to appear before the assembly to respond to allegations of alleged misappropriation of county funds.

After the disagreement between the two Siaya County leaders. The three activists filed a lawsuit against Orengo, accusing him of sabotaging his deputy.

The petitioners allege that the governor has humiliated and ridiculed his deputy by stripping him of his privileges as deputy county administrator.
