Pay Hike Proposal for Ruto, Gachagua, MPs Amidst Kenyan Economic Struggles
In its most recent review, released at the end of June 2023, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) proposed increasing Ruto’s salary by Ksh206,260 for the fiscal year 2024/25.
If the proposals are approved, Ruto’s monthly salary will increase to Ksh1,650,000 beginning in July 2024, up from the current Ksh1,443,750. In two years, this will result in an annual salary increase of Ksh2.4 million.
Gachagua’s proposed salary increase would increase his monthly income from Ksh1,367,438 to Ksh1,402,500, an increase of Ksh175,312 per month. His annual income will increase by Ksh2.1 million as a result.
Thus, the salaries of the president and his vice president will increase by Ksh4.5 million in two years.
However, SRC indicated that the salary increase would occur gradually.
Ruto will earn Ksh1,546,875 per month from July 2023 to June 2024, and then Ksh1,650,000 per month from July 2024 to June 2025.
SRC proposed that Gachagua earn Ksh1,367,438 between July 2023 and July 2024, and Ksh1,402,500 between July 2024 and June 2025.
Other senior state officials, such as cabinet secretaries, who are projected to surpass the Ksh1 million threshold under the proposed changes, are also scheduled to receive salary increases.
As of July 2024, Attorney General Justin Muturi, CSs, will earn Ksh1,056,000, up from his current salary of Ksh924,000.
Principal Secretaries will receive Ksh874,500, up from the current Ksh819,844.
