Senate approves nomination of Douglas Kanja as Police IG

On Tuesday, senators gave their approval for Douglas Kanja to become the new Inspector General of Police.

The confirmation of Kanja’s appointment was officially communicated by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi during a session held in the mid-morning.

Kingi stated, “In accordance with Article 2A Section 12 of the National Police Service Act and Section 8 of the Public Appointments and Parliamentary Approval Act, the Senate has approved Mr. Douglas Kanja’s nomination for the role of Inspector General of Police.”

This announcement follows less than a week after Kanja underwent scrutiny by both the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security and the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations.

During his parliamentary vetting on August 15, Kanja committed to implementing several security reforms within the National Police Service if appointed.

These reforms include bolstering the police force to tackle banditry and addressing systemic corruption within the NPS.

Kanja expressed during the vetting session, “I bring extensive experience and expertise. You will have an Inspector General who will ensure your safety around the clock.”

He also highlighted the issue of cattle rustling, noting, “The theft of cattle has become a lucrative business. Recovering stolen animals is challenging. Besides the current multi-agency efforts, we need to use technology to track stolen livestock.”

Kanja succeeds Japhet Koome, who resigned from the position in July.

President William Ruto nominated Douglas Kanja for the IG role on July 25, praising Kanja’s nearly forty-year career in law enforcement as evidence of his suitability for the position.

Ruto noted, “In line with Article 245 (2) of the Constitution, the President has nominated Douglas Kanja Kirocho as the Inspector-General of the National Police Service.”

The President added, “The nominee has completed extensive security training both domestically and internationally, and has served a total of thirty-nine years as a career police officer.”
