Paid Goons?: Protestors in Mombasa Pause, Watch as Vehicles Set on Fire and Property Destroyed

A group of protestors in Mombasa County were caught on camera breaking into parked vehicles in the Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday, July 2.

The group was hitting the cars with stones destroying the windscreens and window panes. Additionally, some protestors were seen forcefully gaining entry into the vehicles and stealing some undisclosed valuables.

In the CBD some vehicles were set on fire resulting in further damages as anti-government protestors turned chaotic. A cloud of smoke engulfed the air as some protestors fled.

This turn of events forced firefighters from the county to rush to the scene before the fire spread to other vehicles.

Some protestors were also caught on camera throwing stones and vandalizing some shops in the CDB. Police intervened to stop the protestors and arrest some looters and pickpocketers taking advantage of the protests.

According to reports, the protestors became rowdy after three people were injured after a private citizen shot at them. The locals argued that it was unnecessary to use violence when the protests were peaceful.

The private citizen was spotted with a gun threatening protestors and firing at a group of Mombasa residents on the residents. In return, the residents threw stones at him but he stood his ground shooting at the demonstrators.

This came a few hours after Governor Abdulswamad Nassir pleaded with the locals to avoid destroying other people’s properties.

Nassir while speaking to protestors on Tuesday cautioned against vandalizing or destroying property during the anti-government protests.

“Let people demonstrate in peace and the police should provide security for the protestors. Their work is to ensure thieves do not steal from demonstrators,” he remarked.

The governor added that destroying property and injuring fellow Kenyans was only going to hurt the county and result in further losses.

Mombasa was among the counties where protests took a turn in the afternoon forcing police officers to take drastic measures to disperse crowds and restore peace. Some Kenyans have been injured and shops vandalized.
