Over 100 Protesters Arrested In Nairobi CBD Charged With Being Drunk And Disorderly

After a night in police custody, over 100 individuals arrested during the July 16 anti-government protests in Nairobi’s CBD were formally charged and subsequently released by the court.

Among the protesters was Polo Kimani, a well-known personality, who, along with others, was freed on Wednesday afternoon following a day spent in the City Hall basement and then in court.

Lawyer James wa Njeri reported that all 109 accused individuals were granted bail of Ksh.500 each, facing a uniform charge of ‘drunk and disorderly’.

Sharing a snapshot of the charge sheet online, Wa Njeri commented, “Bail set at 500 shillings each. We have 109 accused persons in court. Can 109 people be drunk and disorderly together in the CBD? Kenya is full of surprises.”

Polo Kimani himself, in a separate video where he appeared physically assaulted, shared the updates and acknowledged being roughed up by the police.

“Released on 500 KES cash bail. Scheduled for a pre-trial in two weeks. Many thanks. LSK is handling the payment. Everyone goes home tonight,” he wrote.

“Pressure keeps mounting. For those wondering why my head is swollen, it’s from the beatings I received yesterday. Ruto must go, I swear!”

Earlier, Kimani had exposed the charges read to the protesters, asserting they were fabricated.

“They’re making up charges now. My charge sheet says I’m accused of being drunk and disorderly. My goodness, I haven’t touched alcohol in 5 years. Let’s do a drug test…” he lamented.

In a video shared by Jerotich Seii, an injured Kimani was seen limping upstairs, looking back at the media team and saying, “They crushed us!”
