Orengo’s Sudden Shift: From Critic to Supporter of Ruto’s Broad-Based Government Strategy
Siaya Governor James Orengo has become the center of an online conversation after appearing to shift his stance in favor of a broad-based government, a concept he had strongly criticized just weeks prior.
On Saturday, August 24, Governor Orengo was in the company of President William Ruto during a working visit to Nandi before heading to Kakamega for a thanksgiving event organized by Co-operatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya.
During the Nandi visit, Orengo praised President Ruto for his decision to include members of the opposition in the National Executive, describing it as a crucial move that helped to prevent a potential political crisis.
The governor, who had previously been a staunch critic of Ruto’s administration, used this occasion to express his gratitude for the president’s support of Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson role.

This gesture allowed Orengo to subtly demonstrate his newfound allegiance to President Ruto while maintaining his loyalty to Raila.
“I want to thank the president for his commitment to helping Raila Odinga in his quest to head to Addis Ababa. We are confident that he (Raila) will succeed. Additionally, our nation is one, and while we may face challenges, it is crucial that we continue to unite,” Orengo stated.
Orengo’s remarks have sparked discussions, with many interpreting his recent actions as a significant shift in his political alignment.
His decision to praise Ruto’s inclusive approach contrasts sharply with his earlier criticisms and has led observers to question the motivations behind his change in tone.
By focusing on Ruto’s support for Raila’s international ambitions, Orengo seems to be carefully navigating his dual loyalties—acknowledging the president’s leadership while still aligning himself with the long-time opposition leader.
