Omanyala’s Record Nullified After Botswana Blunder

Saturday, April 29th’s Botswana Golden Grand Prix victory of sensational athlete Ferdinand Omanyala was disqualified due to a technicality involving a lane infraction.

According to reports, the African record holder stepped onto the track in an attempt to observe his competitors.

Letsile Tebogo of Botswana was elevated to first place despite finishing second in 9.91 seconds.

Kenny Bednarek of the United States moved into second place with a time of 10.02 seconds.

This was evidenced by Omanyala’s absence from the podium, and an Athletics Kenya representative hinted to the media that the athlete may have been disqualified.

Omanyala’s coach, Duncan Ayiemba, denied the allegations, stating that Omanyala did not appear at the podium while warming up for the 4×100-meter relay.

GossipA2Z.com was unsuccessful in reaching Omanyala because her texts and phone calls went unanswered.

Omanyala’s time of 9.78 seconds fell 0.01 seconds short of the continental and national records. According to reports, the athlete could have broken the record if he had not violated his right to observe Tebogo.

The athlete’s record surpassed Jones Terrence of the Bahamas, who held the previous world record of 9.91 seconds. Before the event, Omanyala’s best score of the season was 10,05, which he achieved by winning the South Africa Grand Prix on April 12, 2023.

The World Athletics Federation changed the rules regarding lane violations, which went into effect on November 1, 2021.

This followed the disqualification of 21 athletes at the 2018 World Indoor Athletic Championships in Birmingham.

While running on the bend of a lane, athletes who step on the lane line on their left or run into the lane are committing lane infractions. According to World Athletics, this results in disqualification for shortening the race distance.

A portion of the statement read, “Running into the lane on an athlete’s right (outer lane) should not be penalized unless there is interference with the athlete running in that lane.”
