Ole Sapit Challenges Ruto on Biased Government Appointments

On Wednesday, May 10, the Anglican Church of Kenya, led by Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit, criticized President William Ruto for what they deemed to be tribal appointments to State Corporations.

Bishop Ole Sapit expressed concern that the Kenya Kwanza administration engaged in a flagrant violation of the Constitution’s requirement for diversity in state appointments.

The head of the Anglican Church of Kenya claimed that President Ruto’s participation in obviously skewed appointments encouraged tribalism and cronyism.

Tribalism and cronyism are blatant, especially about public appointments.

Anglican Bishops stated, “There is an apparent lack of accountability and transparency in our institutions.”

Anglican Bishops also noted that Ruto ran the risk of alienating and losing the support of other communities by focusing on one or two tribes for public appointments.

“Let all institutions and government agencies be impartial and efficient, and not simply beholden to political influence, but serve all Kenyans with impartiality,” they advised.

Archbishop Ole Sapit stated that President Ruto should take the initiative in eradicating the tribalism that has for years weakened Kenya’s communal and national fabric.

The clergymen also argued that the lopsided appointments could sow discord among communities and lead to tribal conflicts and tensions in the future.

Kenya is still at a crossroads, according to the Anglican Church, which believes that the country should be indoctrinated in nationalism rather than blatant tribalism.

Ole Sapit stated that no Kenyan tribe is superior to another; consequently, all tribes should have equal opportunities for public appointments.

“We observe that the government is treading on shaky ground by weakening its fight against corruption. Bishop Ole Sapit lamented that impunity in the management of public resources and public affairs is becoming the norm.

On February 22, 2023, the leader of Azimio la Umoja, Raila Odinga, criticizes President Ruto and his minister, Rigathi Gachagua, for giving state jobs to their communal cronies.

Raila remarked that the unilateral appointment could easily divide the nation into unproductive tribal cocoons.

“Mr. Ruto and his deputy have given their respective communities more than five cabinet positions each, while others have none, yet they claim to be unifying the country,” stated Raila.

For weeks, Kenyans on social media had criticized President Ruto for rewarding kin with plum jobs and marginalizing other communities in a society with a diverse ethnic makeup.
