ODM MPs Set Expectations for Ruto Ahead of Nyanza Trip
On Wednesday, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)-affiliated Luo Nyanza legislators issued demands before William Ruto visited the region.
Parliamentarians, led by the National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, demanded that the government immediately resolve the ethnically motivated attacks at Soundu along the Kisumu-Kericho border before the President begins his tour of the region.
”We want the regime that is in power, that is the Kenya Kwanza regime led by Hon. William Ruto to take this issue as a priority and move with speed and stop the killings that are ongoing,” Wandayi told journalists on behalf of the MPs.
”If left unchecked, these killings have the potential to snowball into an uncivil state that will eventually become unmanageable”
Since the last general election, the MPs noted that this is not the first time murders have occurred in the area and its environs.
According to the lawmakers, the attacks in Sondu were plotted and executed by individuals with ulterior motives.

MPs maintained that it is the responsibility of the national government to secure all Kenyans, regardless of political affiliation.
”There is a danger that if these killings are not stopped, the victims are likely to feel that they have been abandoned by the state and therefore resort to measures to protect themselves,” added the Minority Leader.
The parliamentarians reacted to the confrontations that occurred at Soundu along the Kisumu-Kericho border on October 3 at night. The confrontations resulted in 3 fatalities and dozens of injuries. During the disorder, cattle herds were also taken.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that the region has experienced conflict. The region has been plagued by recurrent conflicts, with ethnic tensions frequently suspected as the primary cause.
The press conference by the Luo Nyanza legislators occurred just before President Ruto’s four-day visit to the region.
Ruto is scheduled to begin his tour in Kisumu County on October 6.
Before moving on to Siaya, Homa Bay, and Migori, the President will inaugurate the MV Uhuru 2 and oversee various other initiatives in Kisumu County.
