Odinga Cancels Azimio’s Kamukunji Rally: Here is Why
Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio La Umoja party, canceled his highly anticipated Kamukunji rally on July 12 after accusing the police of injuring demonstrators.
The former prime minister added that thugs were also commissioned to vandalize property to deflect responsibility from the opposition.
The nationwide demonstrations will continue until President William Ruto repeals sections of the Finance Act of 2023.
Raila stated, “We have witnessed savage attacks on our supporters by police officers who have indiscriminately shot, injured, and killed several individuals across the country, including here in Nairobi.”
Raila accused President William Ruto of employing a method of strategic elimination against demonstrators, whose defense of their rights he praised.
“At this point, it is important to emphasize that there is no turning back. We will exercise our constitutional rights until our demands are met.
He asserted that a large number of protesters were arrested for engaging in a constitutionally protected activity.
Raila observed that the country was gradually degenerating into a police state in which police arbitrarily maim and murder citizens.

“We cannot allow it to happen again in our nation. We have always maintained that these gatherings are peaceful until the authorities decide to disperse them with bullets and tear gas, as stated by Raila.
The leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) noted that ordinary citizens were determined to determine their destinies, noting that the Kenya Kwanza government had abandoned them in their time of need.
He also acknowledged protesters who, according to him, came from the most remote areas of the country to demonstrate against Ruto’s regime.
“The message is strong and clear: Kenyans are exhausted. Kenyans are weary. People are exhausted by new promises made on top of previous ones. People are weary of being disregarded.
“They have grown weary of being told what to do and when to do it. People are fed up with going to bed hungry, waking up hungry, and returning to bed ravenous. “People are exhausted from walking from one corner of this city to another, from one town to another, and from one office to another in search of a job and finding none,” Raila said.
