Nyanza Demos Reveal Ethnic Profiling in Police Brutality – Raila

Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition party Azimio, has described the alleged police atrocities in Nyanza during anti-government protests as ethnic profiling and cleansing.

Tuesday, while addressing the international media, Raila stated, “They are targeting a specific community, which is not the path we want Kenya to take.”

They are targeting the Luo people of Nyanza. According to him, this is why there is a disproportionate use of live ammunition in areas such as Migori, Homa Bay, Kisumu, and Siaya.

Last week, the police were accused of using excessive force against demonstrators, resulting in the deaths of more than 30 people and the injuries of several others.

The police have taken no action regarding the use of poisoned arrows in Sondu Market, Kisumu, where 18 persons have been shot with arrows.

Raila stated that corruption in the country was on the rise and that the administration managed by President William Ruto would not improve the situation.

Since former President Uhuru Kenyatta resigned from office, corruption in the country has risen dramatically. Even if this government is granted another term in office, they will not progress, he stated.

Anyang’ Ngong’o, the governor of Kisumu, condemned the disproportionate use of force by the police against Kisumu residents on July 22.

In a statement, Nyongo claimed that police who had been dispatched to Kisumu to quell what he termed nonviolent demonstrations were using excessive force against innocent, defenseless members of the public.

“Even after preventing members of the public from exercising their democratic rights to picket over the high cost of living imposed by the Kenya Kwanza government, the police are pursuing innocent residents deep into the residential areas and brutalizing them,” he lamented.
