NTSA DG George Njao Sent on 30-Day Leave, Replacement Named
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) board placed Director General(DG) George Njao on 30 days of mandatory leave on Monday, April 24.
In a statement to the press, the board stated that it needed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the rising number of accidents across the nation over the past month.
The board also disclosed that it had established a committee to lead the investigations.
Cosmas Ngeso was appointed as acting Director General until the next general meeting, a period of 30 days.
“Until the board decides otherwise, we have granted our director general 30 days of leave to investigate some of the information we require.
“A special investigative committee has been formed. The interim DG is Cosmas Ngeso, and at the next general assembly we will deliberate and decide how to proceed,” the board stated.

In a separate statement, the Authority noted that it was conducting a thorough cleaning operation. Ensuring that only inspection certificates and driving licenses issued legally would be recognized.
NTSA employees who issue licenses without following protocol are also in warning and will face punishment.
NTSA stated, “Furthermore, the board shall take immediate and severe disciplinary action against staff members who issue an inspection certificate. And or road service license and or driving license and driving license (DL) endorsement to any vehicle and driver. Without following prescribed procedures.”
Kipchumba Murkomen, Transport Cabinet Secretary, ordered all PSV and commercial drivers to retake their driving tests on April 19.
He said the government would install surveillance cameras on major highways with command centers to catch and fine lawbreakers.
On April 3, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reported 1,070 deaths in the first three months of 2023.
The number of fatalities was attributable to speeding vehicles, crossing in undesignated areas, distracted driving or walking, and drunk driving.
