North Rift Religious Leaders Urge Ruto-Raila Dialogue Amid Protests

To restore harmony in the country, North Rift religious leaders have called for bipartisan talks between President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Addressing residents during a Thanksgiving ceremony at St. Joseph’s Chepterit Girls High School, the leaders stated that the rivalry between the two top coalition leaders was evident in the demonstrations witnessed in several counties, which resulted in the loss of lives and the devastation of property.

The Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Eldoret, Dominic Kimengech, stated that the protests threaten to disrupt the country’s peace and incite violence.

“Viongozi wetu waweze kukaa chini na kuongea pamoja, ile kitu inaitwa dialogue, kwa sababu nchi ikiharibika inaharibikia kila mtu na ndio maana nasema tuweze kuomba na kutafuta mbinu ya kutatua haya mambo yote ambayo tunaweza kuona inatupeleka mbali,” he said.

In addition, he urged Kenyans to stay together as a family and refrain from fighting, as the country and economy will both decline.

“Sisi tukiwa wanakenya, sisi ni familia moja, nchi moja, na tukigawanyika namna hii nchi yetu itaumia zaidi,” said Kimengech.

Paul Biego, a local representative, urged the opposition to allow the Kenya Kwanza government uninterrupted time to implement its policies.

“Give time to the Kenya Kwanza, they have a manifesto stating that if you like Kenyan citizens, there is a substantial portion of the country that also believes in President Ruto, so you must give us time,” Biego said.

“Your time will come, so I condemn in the strongest possible terms the maandamano, the devastation of property, and the loss of lives, which you continue to commit with complete disregard. Therefore, I request that the opposition call off the maandamano.”
