Noah Lyles Edges Out Ferdinand Omanyala by a Whisker to Claim Paris Diamond League 100m Crown

At the Diamond League meeting in Paris on Friday, world champion in the 200 meters Noah Lyles cruised to victory in the 100 meters, while Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs could only manage a seventh-place finish.

In ideal conditions for sprinting at the Stade Charlety, Lyles finished in 9.97 seconds, narrowly beating out Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, who crossed the line in 9.98 seconds, and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, who came in third with a time of 10.05 seconds.

Even though Omanyala has had a successful season on African soil, he has not yet won a title in the Diamond League.

Jacobs’s season got off to a rough start, as the Italian athlete had to withdraw from two 100-meter showdowns with world champion Fred Kerley due to back problems on both occasions.

He did not respond appropriately as Kerley’s US teammate Lyles began to pull away to the finish line. Jacobs finished in tenth place, twenty-one seconds behind the leader.

Lyles displayed some class in his transition into the final 50 meters to pull clear, even though African champion Omanyala, who is this season’s fastest after running 9.84 seconds in Nairobi, was breathing down his neck. Yohan Blake of Jamaica, who won the world championship in 2011, was the fastest out of the blocks.
