Faith Kipyegon Shatters 5000m World Record at Paris Diamond League

    What you should know:

    • Kipyegon, a specialist in the 1500-meter dash. Defeated Letesenbet Gidey for second place in a race where the Ethiopian was attempting to break the world record.

On Friday, Faith Kipyegon broke the women’s 5,000-meter world record with a time of 14:05.20 at the Paris Diamond League, less than a week after breaking the 1500-meter record in Florence.

In a stunning display of dominance, Kipyegon, who had set a new world record in the 1,500m in Florence, Italy on June 2 in three minutes and 49.11 seconds, won the 5,000m in Paris in 14 minutes and 05 seconds.

Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia set the previous record of 14:06.62 on July 10, 2020, in Valencia, Spain. Kipyegon surpassed Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia with 600 meters to go, breaking the record.

Beatrice Chepkoech, the holder of the 3,000-meter steeplechase world record, dropped out after 3,000 meters as Gidey led with Kipyegon breathing down her neck.

Then, after 4,200 meters, Kipyegon would gradually pass Gidey, go on to win. And become the first Kenyan woman to hold the 5,000-meter world record.

She beat Gidey. The Olympic 10,000-meter champion, to second place with a season-best time of 14:07.94. While another Ethiopian, Taye Ejgayehu, placed third with a time of 14:13.58.

“No, I did not think about the World Record, and I have no idea how I broke it,” said the 2016 and 2020 Olympic 1,500-meter champion, who is 29 years old.

“I simply concentrated on the green light and attempted to remain calm and enjoy the race. The 2017 and 2022 world 1,500m champion explained, “I just ran the race and wanted to see what would happen; I was so shocked when I saw it was a WR.” “I was obsessed with doing my best. I merely desired to improve my PB; a world record was not in my plans.”

Kipyegon stated that all she desired was to pursue Gidey, whom she described as an extraordinary woman.

“It is incredible. I do not know what will happen next,” Kipyegon stated, adding that she will discuss the matter with her coach Patrick Sang and her Global Sports management. “I am so elated, I do not know what to say because I am so emotional.” “Everything is possible if my body is healthy,” said Kipyegon.
