Nigeria’s President-Elect Bola Tinubu Denies Ill-Health Reports, Claims Travel Abroad for Rest

On Wednesday, Bola Tinubu, Nigeria’s president-elect, denied media reports that he is in poor health.

According to his campaign team, he is currently overseas to rest and plan his transition program following a “very exhaustive” presidential election campaign.

Tinubu’s health is being closely monitored in Nigeria, where a former president passed away after a prolonged illness, and current President Muhammadu Buhari regularly travels abroad for medical check-ups.

Nigeria’s President-Elect Bola Tinubu Denies Ill-Health Reports, Claims Travel Abroad for Rest. Two of Tinubu’s closest opponents are challenging his victory in last month’s disputed presidential election in court.

During some campaign appearances, the 70-year-old former governor of Lagos seemed frail, and his speech was often slow and slurred. However, he repeatedly dismissed concerns about his health.

The campaign spokesperson, Tunde Rahman, stated that after an arduous campaign and election season, Tinubu had gone abroad to rest and plan his transition program ahead of his May 29, 2023 inauguration. Tunde did not reveal where Tinubu had traveled, but he confirmed that he would return soon.
