New Appointment: Evelyn Chelugut Takes Over Immigration Services from Alexander Muteshi

On Saturday, President William Ruto was present. On 13 May, pressured to intervene after Evelyn Cheluget replaced Alexander Muteshi as Interior Ministry Director General of Immigration Services.

Alexander Muteshi, the former director of counterterrorism at the National Intelligence Service (NIS), stated that the changes would take effect on Monday, May 15.

The departing director general informed the staff that he would be taking a leave of absence and urged them to give the new manager their full support in her new position.

Muteshi was appointed in 2020 and succeeded by former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s appointee, retired major general Gordon Kihalangwa.

Please provide the new Director General with all necessary assistance. I appreciate the support you provided me during my tenure as Director,” he said.

Following the announcements, a portion of Azimio and other political party leaders petitioned the Head of State to intervene over the administration’s appointments, citing the administration’s diverse selections.

Senator Ledama Ole Kina of Narok commented, “It is official that we no longer have a country named Kenya.”

Ekuru Aukot, leader of the Thirdway Alliance, added, “How unfortunate.”

The appointment also followed a statement from the Bishops of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), who expressed bias in government appointments.

“There is blatant nepotism and tribalism, especially regarding public appointments. Our institutions appear to be lacking in accountability and transparency. This is inadmissible.

“Let all institutions and government agencies be impartial and efficient, and not simply beholden to political influence, but serve all Kenyans with impartiality,” the statement read in part.

Notably, the immigration department falls under the Ministry of the Interior, which is led by Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, and Julius Bitok is the Principal Secretary for Immigration and Citizens Services.
