Nelson Havi: AU Job Support is a Deliberate Attempt to Remove Raila from Kenya’s Politics

Former Law Society of Kenya president Nelson Havi suggests that backing Raila Odinga for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson role could be a strategic move to distance him from Kenya’s political landscape for good.

Havi argues that the government’s decision to support the opposition leader may stem from a desire to weaken his influence in the national political arena.

“What many may overlook is the intentional effort to edge Raila Odinga out of Kenyan politics, which might be beneficial considering he’s been the primary alternative for five election cycles,” Havi remarked during an interview on Citizen TV on Tuesday.

Despite this, Havi praised Odinga for his long-standing leadership in Kenya, expressing optimism that Odingaโ€™s experience positions him well for the continental role.

Havi believes Odingaโ€™s departure could open doors for fresh faces to lead in Kenyan politics.

“He has served as a statesman in Kenya; now it’s the perfect moment for him to transition into a statesman role for Africa,” Havi stated.

“Itโ€™s time for Kenya to welcome new leadership options at the top of the political hierarchy.”

Odinga is scheduled to be formally introduced as Kenyaโ€™s candidate for the AU chairmanship at State House today, Tuesday 27.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a statement that key Eastern African leaders are expected to be present.

However, Odingaโ€™s bid faces stiff competition, as he will require significant backing from African leaders to outmaneuver Djiboutiโ€™s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahmoud Youssouf, and Somaliaโ€™s former deputy prime minister, Fawzia Yusuf.

In May 2024, the AU Executive Council resolved that Eastern Africa would produce the next AUC chairperson, while Northern Africa would elect the deputy.

The election for the new chairperson is slated for 2025, following the conclusion of Chadโ€™s Moussa Fakiโ€™s two-term tenure.
