NCIC Now Wants 10 Counties in Kenya Renamed(List)

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has announced plans to push for the renaming of ten counties associated with specific ethnic groups to address potential discrimination issues.

During a press conference held on Monday, May 27, in Nairobi, NCIC chairman Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia emphasized that this initiative aims to tackle ethnic-based discrimination against residents in these counties.

The counties slated for potential renaming include Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Nandi, Kisii, Turkana, Embu, Samburu, Taita Taveta, West Pokot, and Elgeyo Marakwet.

Dr. Kobia explained, “As part of implementing the recommendations from our 2023 Ethnic and Diversity Audit for County Public Service, NCIC will advocate for a parliamentary motion to rename counties associated with specific ethnic groups, thereby eliminating potential discrimination along ethnic lines.”

NCIC addressed the nation’s peace and cohesion status during the press briefing.

The commission highlighted a significant decrease in hate speech incidents attributed to continuous public engagement in mitigating hate speech and ethnic contempt.

However, Dr. Kobia noted that despite improvements, the commission received 67 hate speech cases.

Dr. Kobia stated, “The Commission has been actively monitoring hate speech instances across various platforms, including social media. We’re pleased to report a notable decline in cases.”

“Nevertheless, out of the 67 reported cases, 43 are currently under investigation, 2 are in court proceedings, 13 have been resolved, and 13 have been settled through conciliation in line with the NCI Act 2008,” Dr. Kobia added.

Additionally, NCIC identified 44 cases of discrimination, 24 cases of incitement, 6 cases of hate speech, 93 cases of misinformation, and 68 cases of disinformation on social media.
