Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja Blames Joe Nyutu for Gachagua’s Political Downfall
Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja has accused Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu of playing a major role in the downfall of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Speaking on Citizen TV, Karanja claimed that Nyutu’s words and actions fueled Gachagua’s impeachment.
How Nyutu’s Comments Affected Gachagua
Karanja revealed that Nyutu made strong statements in Senate and political gatherings about Mt Kenya’s power and Gachagua’s influence. She noted that these remarks increased division and tension, which eventually led to Gachagua’s impeachment in October 2024. The former DP was removed from office after being accused of tribalism and other charges.
“He was responsible for Gachagua’s fall with his comments. I even approached him and asked what he was trying to achieve,” Karanja stated.
Nyutu’s Criticism of Gachagua
Earlier in 2024, Nyutu had publicly criticized Gachagua, calling him a liability to President William Ruto. He even suggested that Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro should replace Gachagua as Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 elections. Nyutu accused Gachagua of having a dictatorial style of leadership and being out of touch with the people.
At the same time, Gachagua was pushing for more development in Mt Kenya. He had claimed that Kenya was like a company where certain regions, including Mt Kenya, deserved more resources because of their support for Ruto in 2022.
Mending Fences and Political Shifts
Despite their differences, Nyutu and Gachagua later reconciled. Nyutu became one of Gachagua’s strongest allies and defended him during the impeachment process. However, after Gachagua’s removal, Nyutu turned into a vocal critic of Ruto’s administration.
Recently, Nyutu himself faced political setbacks. He was removed as the Chair of the Senate Education Committee following a political deal between Ruto and Raila Odinga. This agreement allowed Raila’s allies to take over key Senate positions, leading to tensions among politicians from different regions. Mt Kenya leaders have since accused Ruto of sidelining their region in government appointments and development projects.
Nyutu Denies Involvement in Gachagua’s Downfall
During the Citizen TV interview, Nyutu denied being responsible for Gachagua’s impeachment. He stated that he had changed his opinion about Gachagua after they resolved their differences in a private meeting.
With ongoing political realignments, Mt Kenya leaders continue to debate their place in the government, signaling further political battles ahead.
