Nairobi Water Official Arrested by Police
Police detained a supervisor at the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NAWASCO) for soliciting a bribe of Ksh50,000 from a customer.
According to a statement issued by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on August 2, the superintendent was arrested while on duty in Kariobangi South after officers and the complainant were lured into a trap.
In Accordance to the EACC, the client filed a complaint with the agency on July 31 in response to the official’s persistent demand for Ksh50,000.
According to reports, the gratuity was solicited to facilitate the reconnection of water to the client’s residence.
The complainant’s water was disconnected due to unpaid bills totaling Ksh100,000.
EACC documented that the water official threatened to forge the complainant’s water account to induce the complainant to pay the bribe.
The detectives and the client then devised a scheme to have the official collect the money without the police’s knowledge.
“He allegedly demanded that the complainant pay a fictitious Ksh100,000 water bill due to a faulty meter.”
“On Monday, the suspect is said to have summoned the complainant to his office in Pangani, where he allegedly threatened to increase the alleged ‘overdue water bill’ to Ksh240,000 if the bribe was not paid,” he stated.
EACC added that it will pursue proceedings against the official under the 2016 Bribery Act.
Before the start of the trial, the senior official was released on police parole.
In addition, the Anti-Corruption Commission cautioned government officials against using their officers improperly to solicit bribery from Kenyans.
