This will encourage businesses to maintain weekend hours.

During the next fiscal year, parking may be free on the weekends for motorists in Nairobi.

If the County Assembly approves a proposal by Nairobi Governor Sakaja to eliminate weekend parking fees in the city, this will occur.

This, according to Sakaja, will encourage businesses to be open on the weekends.

“When the County Assembly approves the Finance Bill 2023. I propose that Nairobi not charge weekend parking fees,” he said.

This will also allow residents of Nairobi to support local businesses and conduct business on weekends. I am aware that times are difficult. This city, however, belongs to us,” Sakaja remarked.

The governor explained that the county would also like to attract more weekend visitors to the central business district.

He also promised to ensure that security measures are in place around the clock.

“Other leading cities around the world are extremely lively on weekends. Nairobi should adopt a similar vitality. As this will ensure expansion,” Sakaja added.

Eventually, the Finance Bill 2023 will be presented to the Nairobi County Assembly for approval of the Finance Act.

The provisions of the Act will assist the county in generating its revenue to cover budgetary expenses.

Parking is one of the city’s primary sources of revenue.

From January to March of the third quarter of the fiscal year 2022-23, Sh619.9 million was collected in parking revenue.

To increase revenue, city hall intends to implement hourly parking fees in the central business district.

If the plan is adopted, motorists will pay Sh100 for the first hour of parking in the central business district.

For drivers who intend to park in the city center for additional hours, the rate is Sh50 per hour.

Currently, drivers pay Sh200 per day for on-street and lot parking of small vehicles in and around the central business district.
