Nairobi Residents Face Arrest for Spitting & Throwing Chewed Gum in Public

Nairobi City residents caught spitting on the streets will face arrest, as revealed by Nairobi Chief Environment Officer Geoffrey Moisria on Thursday night.

Addressing the media, the official pointed out that many Nairobi residents are guilty of littering the city without knowing there are bylaws in place to uphold cleanliness standards.

To enforce the directive, the county government plans to station county askaris strategically across the city, urging residents to use handkerchiefs if they need to spit.

โ€œWeโ€™ll position our officers at every corner and street of Nairobi to ensure no one urinates, spits, or litters freely,โ€ Moisria said.

He also issued a stern warning to downtown Nairobi businesses for failing to maintain hygiene standards.

โ€œThe upper Nairobi area, separated by Moi Avenue, is notably cleaner because people there are more responsible compared to those in downtown,โ€ he added.

Moisria, known for strict enforcement of hygiene regulations, revealed that a thorough operation is being prepared to ensure the directive is followed.

โ€œWe intend to fully enforce our bylaws. We canโ€™t act as if no laws exist. Itโ€™s the citizens who empower these laws through electing leaders to implement them,โ€ the environment chief emphasized.

Under the Nairobi County Nuisance Act, it is illegal to dispose of any waste on the streets. The law also criminalizes spitting on footpaths or blowing the nose improperly without using a cloth or tissue.

Violators risk a fine of Ksh10,000 or imprisonment ranging from 6 to 12 months for blowing their nose without a tissue or handkerchief.

On Monday, August 19, a Nairobi court ordered 30 individuals caught urinating in public to clean the Nairobi Funeral Home, formerly City Mortuary.

The Chief Officer supervised the punishment, expressing gratitude to the magistrate for the ruling, noting it would set a precedent for others engaging in similar behavior.

With the strict enforcement of this Act, many Nairobi residents may find themselves on the wrong side of the law due to unawareness of these regulations.
