Nairobi Police Boss Bans Opposition Protests: Azimio Update

The Nairobi Regional Police Commander, Adamson Bungei, has declared that opposition demonstrations will not be permitted in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

Commander Bungei stated on Sunday that despite Azimio’s announcement that they will take to the streets on Tuesday, they will not be permitted to demonstrate because they have not shown goodwill in previous protests.

According to Commander Bungei. Azimio did not meet the requirements of Section 37 of the Constitution. And Section 5 of the Public Order Act for peaceful protests.

Bungei asserts that Azimio violated Section 5 of the Public Order Act, which permits unarmed and peaceful demonstrations.

“As much as article 37 allows you (to protest). Subsection 5 of the same article allows the police to regulate the same procession,” he explained.

“Assemblies that are not peaceful are not protected by the Constitution. Once you fail to meet the requirements of Section 5, it is our responsibility to regulate and manage the situation.

Bungei also asserted that Azimio’s protests resulted in the destruction of property and the loss of life. Rendering them unfit to stage another demonstration.

“Previous demonstrations were violent. As demonstrators armed with machetes attacked members of the public. Leading to the destruction of public property and loss of life,” stated Bungei.

“By this, we are denying the Azimio team permission to proceed with the demonstration. And law enforcement officers will disperse any such gatherings.”

The police chief of Nairobi stated that law and order will be enforced to “ensure Kenyans’ safety.”

This indicates to Kenyans of goodwill that there will be no protests in the city of Nairobi.

Citing allegations that the Kenya Kwanza coalition failed to commit to holding constructive bipartisan talks. Azimio threatened to resume the protests.
