Nairobi High Court Reverses Senator Gloria Orwoba’s Suspension By Senate

The High Court in Nairobi overturned the Senate’s decision to suspend Senator nominee Gloria Orwoba for six months on September 29.

According to the court’s statement, the suspension has been provisionally lifted pending a hearing and decision on the application. The court will discuss the case on October 25.

The Senator petitioned the court last week to halt her suspension because the process was discriminatory, unjust, and non-procedural.

The Committee on Powers and Privileges recommended her suspension due to allegations of sexual assault by a Senate clerk.

The Powers and Privileges Committee recommended that Orwoba be suspended from the House for the remainder of the second session of the thirteenth legislature, citing the gravity of the allegations against her.

The committee also suggested that the senator be denied access to the Parliamentary precincts during the period in which she will not have access to benefits.

Legislators also criticized Orwoba for neglecting to defend herself before the committee.

Before the suspension, the senator had been summoned for questioning by the committee, where she was anticipated to provide evidence supporting her claims that a chambers clerk sexually harassed her.

Senators initially demanded a formal apology before she could return to the House of Representatives.

In May 2023, Orwoba raised concerns about favoritism and sexual harassment emanating from a powerful and influential Senate office.
