Nairobi County Assembly Erupts in Heated Clash Over Committee Dispute

A conflict erupted in the Nairobi County Assembly on Tuesday when a group of Members of the County Assembly disagreed over internal issues.

The conflict erupted when Ngei Ward MCA Redson Otieno criticized Speaker Ken Ngondi, who oversaw the session and upheld Otieno’s removal as Water Committee Chairperson.

Otieno stated that only the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party had the authority to decide his removal from the committee.

In the popular videos, a group of MCAs were seen challenging another MCA while other politicians observed from afar.

The attempt to challenge Redson was countered by another faction of MCAs who swiftly came to the defense of their fellow member.

“Come and Kill me, I don’t fear intimidation,” Redson Onyango could be heard shouting at the County Assembly Speaker as he expressed his displeasure over the dismissal.

The Member of the County Assembly, who pledged to uphold his position, accused the speaker of the assembly of partiality as he questioned why he was the sole person removed from the committee.

After the practice session, the speaker of the house had to end the meeting early due to the increasing disorder.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai criticized the speaker for violating the constitution by removing the Ngei ward MCA from a house committee.

“Unfortunately, the speaker is trying to use illegal means to remove people who are elected by the mandate of the people,” Alai claimed.

“We are members of this house in a very legal and thorough process as per article 177 of the constitution,” the MCA further noted.

Alai stated that the speaker lacked the authority to dissolve any committee. He also accused the speaker of not providing advance notice to Renson Otieno regarding his removal from the committee.
