Naftali Kinuthia, the individual accused of murder, has been handed a 40-year prison term for the calculated killing of Ivy Wangechi, his former partner, outside Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in 2019.

Kinuthia received his sentence from the Eldoret High Court on Thursday, marking the conclusion of the four-year trial for murder.

Justice Stephen Githinji, in his verdict, acknowledged the suspect’s plea but deemed the imposed sentence fitting for the egregious crime for which the suspect was held responsible.

Kinuthia, represented by his attorney, conveyed remorse for the offense and asserted that he had transformed during the four years he spent in custody.

The 33-year-old was apprehended following an assault on his former partner using an axe outside the campus.

In court, he stated that despite investing significant funds in Wangeci over time, she turned him down due to his height, openly embraced another man in his presence, and benefited financially from him despite having no intention of continuing their relationship.

Kinuthia stated in court that he kept providing financial assistance to Wangeci even after she grew apart from him.

He mentioned spending more than Ksh. 100,000 on her and intended to recover that amount from her parents upon recognizing that their relationship was not developing as expected.

He informed Justice Stephen Githinji that before her murder, he had gifted her Ksh. 7,000 for her birthday. However, he expressed disappointment as he had not received an invitation to her celebration.

He mentioned that he wasn’t upset since he had been financially supporting these gatherings throughout their relationship for a long time.
