Murkomen’s Warning After 4-Seater Tuk Tuk Rider With 8 Passengers Flees NTSA’s Arrest(Video)

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced his resolve to ensure that a tuk-tuk cyclist who escaped after being accosted by police in Kisumu is arrested.

In a statement on Thursday, the CS revealed that the rider was stopped by officers from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service (NPS) during a crackdown along the Kisumu – Nairobi Highway.

According to the CS, the rider was carrying eight passengers inside the three-wheeler designed to accommodate only four passengers.

The rider, however, escaped the scene and a manhunt was launched against him.

“This Tuktuk was stopped by NTSA and traffic police officers while carrying eight passengers instead of the recommended four on the Kisumu-Nairobi Road. Needless to say, it was dangerously overloaded,” Murkomen captioned the clip captured of the interaction.

“I hope the cyclist, who fled the scene, will be made to face justice for his reckless behavior.”

In the 49-second clip, a police officer is seen directing the passengers to alight from the automobile before it is discovered that the driver had already escaped.

Murkomen, therefore, challenged all passengers to protest against a driver or cyclist with tendencies to carry excess people, especially during the festive season.

“To all passengers, please don’t encourage this kind of unsafe road behavior by keeping quiet,” Murkomen added.

“Protest when you see a bus driver or a tuk-tuk cyclist starting to overload. Let’s stop risking lives on our roads. Remember that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.”

Excess passengers have been ranked among the highest cause of accidents across the country. According to NTSA, about 3,609 people lost their lives in road accidents between January and October this year.

The crackdown also comes a day after Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome issued a travel advisory to both motorists and their passengers noting that 16 people lost their lives in the past week alone.

“The National Police Service has the mandate to enforce traffic laws. However, I wish to emphasize that road safety is our collective responsibility as Kenyans. We must change our behavior on the roads,” Koome explained.

“Therefore, I am appealing to pedestrians, cyclists, boda boda riders, passengers, and drivers to adhere to traffic rules so that we make this festive season safe for all of us.”
