Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has vowed to take strict legal action against individuals using social media to issue threats and share offensive content targeting Kenya’s leadership.

Speaking on Friday, January 10, during the launch of Turbo Sub-county offices alongside President William Ruto, Murkomen condemned the behavior as unacceptable and vowed to restore order.

โ€œWe will ensure those misusing social media to intimidate others face charges. Without addressing this, we risk losing the order we desire for our nation,โ€ Murkomen stated.

He emphasized the importance of fostering a law-abiding society, calling on citizens, including church leaders, public servants, and politicians, to support efforts to maintain peace and order.

Murkomen also expressed concern over the motivations behind such online misconduct, urging parents and leaders to reflect on the consequences. โ€œIf your childโ€™s classmate shared an image of your child in a coffin, would you defend such behavior? Thatโ€™s a direct threat, and we cannot normalize it,โ€ he questioned.

The CSโ€™s remarks followed reports of Kenyans, primarily youths, being allegedly detained over sharing controversial images portraying President Ruto in a coffin.

While some, like Gideon Kibet (aka Kibet Bull), Billy Mwangi, Bernard Kavuli, and Peter Muteti, were later released, the incidents have drawn widespread attention.

President Ruto, addressing residents in Kapseret, also condemned the trend, accusing certain politicians of paying young people to circulate defamatory content against government officials. โ€œI urge the youth not to be swayed by small payments to create such harmful images. This conduct only destroys families and society,โ€ Ruto warned.

The president cautioned that such actions, if unchecked, could escalate into broader societal harm, urging young people to reject destructive behaviors.
