Mudavadi Challenges Uhuru on Jubilee Party Chaos

The struggle for the former ruling party Jubilee was marked by confusion, as attention shifted to the likely number of casualties on both sides.

The camp of East Africa Legislative Assembly member Kanini Kega expelled David Murathe and Jeremiah Kioni from Jubilee yesterday.

The decision was made just two days before the now-controversial National Delegates Convention (NDC) convened by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Concurrently, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi advised Mr. Kenyatta to relinquish party leadership and concentrate on peacekeeping.

During a tree-planting event at Egerton University, Mr. Mudavadi advised the former head of state to leave politics.

He encouraged Mr. Kenyatta to follow in the footsteps of former presidents Daniel Arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki.

Mr. Mudavadi stated, “We call on Uhuru Kenyatta to be a statesman and promote peace in the region.”

The camp of Mr. Kenyatta, however, informed GossipA2Z that the Jubilee NDC, which will be used to expel party rebels, will proceed as planned.

At stake are prestigious positions in the legislature and party funds.

The Sh135 million allocated to Jubilee by the exchequer for the current fiscal year is also central to the conflict.
The party is due approximately Sh675 million over the next five years.

According to reports, the rebels, who are primarily Jubilee lawmakers, oppose monthly deductions to a party controlled by unelected individuals.

Each of Jubilee’s 29 National Assembly representatives and five senators receives Sh10,000 per month.

In addition, the party has a governor who spends Sh50,000 per month.

Under Jubilee, the implications of the takeover are likely to extend to county assemblies controlled by the opposition coalition Azimio la Umoja One Kenya.

Mr. Kega’s camp intends to leave Azimio and demand the parliamentary party Jubilee’s allotted slots.

In addition, the faction intends to hold meetings with Jubilee ward representatives to instruct them to realign the factors that will affect the allocation of committee slots in county assemblies.

If Jubilee were to leave the alliance, Azimio’s status as the majority party in the Nairobi County Assembly would change.

Orange Democratic Movement has 52, Jubilee has 10, and Wiper has six of the coalition’s 68 ward representatives.

The United Democratic Alliance has 52 assembly members.

The Kega group is targeting a position on the Parliamentary Service Commission. Jubilee is the only political party without a representative on the commission.

In Azimio’s seven-member commission are Mavoko MP Patrick Makau (Wiper), Mishi Mboko (ODM), and Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni (ODM).

John Waluke, an MP from Sirisia, was nominated by Jubilee, but his name was omitted at the submission stage because he was in prison.

“We must obtain what is justly ours. We must obtain a position on the PSC and demand membership on the bipartisan team. We’ve given them fourteen days to comply; if they do not, we will file a lawsuit,” Mr. Kega said.
