Mt Kenya MPs Reverse Stance on Gachagua Impeachment
Some Mt Kenya region Members of Parliament who initially backed the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have now reversed their position.
Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto, Nyeri MP Rahab Mukami, and Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina announced they will no longer pursue efforts to remove DP Gachagua.
“After much reflection and reviewing the motion, I believe this matter should be resolved between our Deputy President and the President, as Kenya is bigger than any individual. I have listened to the people of Nyeri, and they do not want the Deputy President removed,” stated Rahab Mukami.
“Our constituents are saying this impeachment is not a priority; they want us to focus on other pressing issues. As representatives, we must heed their concerns. On Tuesday, I will vote NO,” added Geoffrey Wandeto.
The MPs’ change in stance comes just a day after their names were mentioned in Parliament as supporters of the motion to impeach Gachagua.

Representing Gachagua’s home county of Nyeri, the MPs instead called for a dialogue to reconcile the President and Deputy President.
“Deputy President, please approach the President and ask for forgiveness. And to our President, please sit down with your Deputy, have a conversation, and reach an understanding,” said MP Mukami.
Other MPs from Gachagua’s stronghold who still support the impeachment include Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, Othaya MP Wambugu Wainaina, and Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge.
Embu Woman Representative Pamela Njoki also indicated a change in stance, stating in an official letter that she signed the motion but has now withdrawn her support following discussions with Embu residents.
