MP Gitonga Mukunji Speaks Out After Arrest, Vows to Keep Defending Kenyans
Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji has promised to keep fighting for Kenyans’ rights, even after his recent arrest.
Speaking shortly after his release on Thursday, July 10, Mukunji said he remains fully committed to standing up for the people, adding that his determination is stronger than ever.
“I’m grateful to the people of Embu and all Kenyans for the support. That’s the spirit—we will never stop defending our people’s rights,” Mukunji stated.
The MP walked free after posting a Ksh300,000 cash bail or an alternative surety bond of Ksh1 million. He had spent three days in police custody.
Senior Magistrate Kipkemoi Koech rejected a request by the police to hold Mukunji and two others for 14 more days. Instead, the court released each of them on cash bail.
Mukunji was arrested on Monday, July 7, in Mang’u, Kiambu County, around 3 p.m. He was first taken to Kibii Police Station, then transferred by DCI officers to a different location.

While police didn’t reveal the specific reasons behind his arrest, sources believe it’s linked to the recent Saba Saba protests, which saw widespread unrest. Mukunji, a known ally of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has previously claimed that his arrest was politically motivated.
At the Kahawa Law Courts on Tuesday, July 8, he argued that the charges brought against him were baseless and could not result in a conviction.
“I won’t be silenced. I’ll keep defending my people. But we must put an end to the destruction of property, businesses, and the loss of lives,” he said.
Following his arrest, angry residents in Embu took to the streets, demanding his immediate release.
Meanwhile, several leaders from the Democratic Consolidation Party (DCP), associated with Gachagua, have thrown their weight behind Mukunji. They believe he is the strongest candidate to challenge Embu Governor Cecile Mbarire in the 2027 elections.
