Mount Kenya Locals Urge Deputy President Gachagua to Preserve Muratina Traditions for Ruracio Ceremonies

Cultural activities have borne the brunt of ‘overzealous’ administration officials in the region. As a result of the sustained fight against illegal brews on Mount Kenya.

Muratina, a beverage made from honey and sugarcane juice. Is revered by the Gikuyu and holds a prominent position in community cultural activities.

Now, cultural activists in the region are requesting that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who spearheads the crackdown on illicit brews, make an exception for Muratina.

“No cultural activity can take place among the Gikuyu without muratina, which is used to bless, because of its symbolism,” a cultural activist from Githunguri, who requested anonymity for fear of victimization, explained.

He added that people flock to his homestead every weekend in search of the beverage. On their way to important cultural events such as ruracio (bride price negotiations).

“There are stringent guidelines for the preparation of muratina for use in cultural ceremonies, and our people are aware of this,” he told Wananchi Reporting.

He explained that police and chiefs have exploited the fight against illicit brews. To harass and extort everyone, including those of us who brew this culturally significant beverage.

He stated that muratina should not be included among illegal brews.

“How is it that traditional drinks such as busaa are licensed in Nairobi and sold in clubs, but muratina is illegal on Mount Kenya?” he asked.

“Our pleas for the beverage’s legalization have fallen on deaf ears.” Our constitution recognizes culture, including cultural activities. Why are we subject to harassment?”

When the fight against illicit brews began in earnest at the beginning of April, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba warned that muratina should not be targeted.
