Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Rejects Ruto’s Plan to Privatise Ports

Governor of Mombasa Abdulswamad Nassir opposes the Kenya Ports Authority’s (KPA) plan to privatize sections of the Mombasa Port just days after the authority issued a request for proposals.

On Tuesday, at the commissioning of the Offshore Fishing Boats, the governor questioned how the initiative would benefit the residents of Mombasa.

In addition, he demanded to know what feasibility study led to the decision to privatize the port.

According to the governor, the proposal would only harm the nation and benefit a small number of individuals. He questioned how harbor employees would maintain their employment.

Despite being warned against speaking out against the privatization, he emphasized that he was not afraid to do so.

“We cannot be taken for a ride, today they want to privatize the ports and when speaking against t those, in my office tell me to tone it down,” he stated.

Abdulswamad added that he would combat the growing dictatorship in the country, particularly if it emanated from the national government.

He mentioned the conflict in the western region regarding the intended privatization of failing sugar factories.

The county administrator believed that the national government intended to seize control of Mombasa’s resources, adding, “If they had the chance, they would have sold the water in the ocean.”

On September 12, KPA Managing Director William Ruto invited those interested in the development and administration of private assets through Public Private Partnerships (PPP) to submit proposals.

Lamu Container Terminal Berths 1 to 3, Lamu Special Economic Zone, Mombasa Port Berths 11 to 14, and Mombasa Port Container Terminal 1 are available to prospective vendors.

The proposal to privatize ports was initially proposed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposed by his successor, the Deputy President at the time.

Since then, President William Ruto has made a U-turn.
