Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir Backs Raila’s Fresh Presidential Bid

Governor Abdulswamad Nassir of Mombasa has expressed the backing of the Coastal region for Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.

Nassir, a staunch supporter of Mr. Odinga, expresses certainty that the leader of the ODM possesses the necessary qualities to defeat President Ruto in the upcoming 2027 elections.

The County leader clarified that Mr. Odinga comprehends the ongoing difficulties faced by the nation, especially with the daily rise in the cost of living.

“Raila has not indicated that he will vie for the presidency in 2027. Baba (referring to Raila Odinga), you have not given me a mandate to be the spokesperson of ODM, nor have you given me the duty of being Raila Odinga’s spokesperson.

However, you have given me the mandate to be the spokesperson for the people of Mombasa, the Coast, and all of Kenya. For us, we are not asking, we are not requesting, and we are not pleading. We, the people of Kenya, command you to vie for the presidency in 2027,” said the Governor.

He added, “We are not begging for anything. But we demand that you, as Kenyans, must be on the 2027 ballot. Because we have not seen someone who can set aside his interests and serve Kenyans, apart from you”.

In the year 2022, Mr. Raila participated in the highly sought-after leadership race in the country via the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Alliance. However, he was defeated by his primary rival, the present President, William Ruto.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chair, Mr. Wafula Chebukati (now retired), declared Dr. Ruto the winner of Kenya’s presidential elections. Dr. Ruto secured victory with 7,176,141 votes, constituting 50.59 percent of the valid votes cast. This surpassed former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s 6,942,930 votes, accounting for 48.85 percent. Notably, Dr. Ruto had previously served as Kenya’s Deputy President from 2013 under the Jubilee Government, led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

At his inauguration in September 2022, Rigathi Gachagua, the Deputy President sworn in as his running mate, asserted that they had taken over a deteriorating economy.

So far, Mr. Gachagua attributes the economic challenges in Kenya to Ruto’s predecessor, a sentiment that has received tacit backing from the President as well.
