Mixed Reactions as Ndindi Nyoro Fails to Sign Impeachment Motion against Rigathi Gachagua

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has sparked a debate across the Kenyan online community after distancing himself from the move to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The House received the notice of the motion on Tuesday afternoon, October 1.

What is Ndindi Nyoro’s position on Gachagua’s impeachment?

Many Kenyans are questioning Nyoro’s absence from the list of MPs backing the motion, especially considering his close ties with President William Ruto, whose allies in Parliament were eager to support Gachagua’s impeachment.

However, it’s noteworthy that Nyoro has typically avoided highly divisive national issues.

For example, in June, Nyoro was notably quiet compared to his peers who fervently supported the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

Nyoroโ€™s approach to Gachaguaโ€™s impeachment reflects this same reluctance.

Some speculate that the MP’s decision to remain uninvolved might be part of a bigger strategy.

It is suggested that Nyoro could be a potential replacement for Gachagua, making his endorsement of the impeachment appear self-serving and premature.

Other MPs from Mt Kenya who refrained from supporting the motion include Gatanga MP Edward Muriu and Maragua’s Mary Wamaua.

On what basis are MPs seeking to impeach Gachagua?

Kibwezi MP Mwengi Mutuse, who initiated the motion, laid out several accusations against Gachagua, committing to provide evidence to convince his fellow MPs to remove him from office.

The allegations for impeachment include gross violations of the constitution, reckless and inflammatory remarks, misconduct in his role as Ruto’s principal assistant, corrupt acquisition of assets worth over KSh 5.7 billion, and breaches of both national and international laws, such as the National Cohesion and Integration Act.

In total, 291 MPs have signed the motion to impeach Gachagua.

    How will Gachagua be impeached?

After the motion is tabled in the National Assembly, a debate will follow, culminating in a vote.

For the impeachment to proceed, at least two-thirds of MPs must support it, indicating the House’s decision to impeach the deputy president.

The case will then move to the Senate, where the speaker will organize a seven-day session to review the charges against Gachagua.

If at least two-thirds of senators back the motion after hearing both sides, Gachagua will be removed from office.

This development comes as the deputy president accuses President Ruto of orchestrating his removal.
