Migori ODM Members Target Mbadi’s MP Slot After CS Nomination

A group of ODM party members in Migori County has called on the party leadership to nominate a local candidate for the position expected to open up due to the anticipated appointment of Nominated MP and ODM chairperson John Mbadi as Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS).

This request follows President William Ruto’s July 24 nomination of Mbadi for the position in his second round of cabinet appointments.

President Ruto has also put forward other opposition figures for prominent roles: Ugunja MP James Opiyo Wandayi for the Energy portfolio, former Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho for the Mining and Blue Economy Ministry, and former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya for the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs Development. These nominations are pending parliamentary approval.

George Ochola, Migori County Chief Officer in the Department of Fisheries and Blue Economy, led the ODM members in advocating for a Migori-based nominee, stressing that it would be a fitting recognition of the region’s strong support for ODM.

Ochola noted that if Parliament confirms Mbadi and Wandayi, they will occupy crucial positions and will require the backing of all Kenyans and the ODM party to fulfill their roles effectively.

He also described the appointments as a notable achievement for the Luo community.

Despite the opposition leaders’ nominations, ODM party leader Raila Odinga has asserted that neither ODM nor the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition has formed a formal agreement with Ruto’s government.

On Thursday, Mr. Odinga reiterated that although discussions have taken place, no formal coalition agreement has been established between the involved parties.

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Jeremiah Kioni have since pledged to reject any engagement with the Kenya Kwanza administration, signaling a potential division within ODM following the nominations.

They argue that President Ruto is seeking to undermine the opposition by integrating some of its members into the government.
