Former US First Lady Michelle Obama has shared personal insights about her marriage to former President Barack Obama. Speaking on her new podcast, In My Opinion, alongside her brother Craig Robinson, Michelle, 61, reflected on the challenges and growth in their relationship over three decades.
One of the things she had to adjust to was Barack’s struggle with punctuality in their early years together.
“Barack had to learn what it really meant to be on time. Just when we were supposed to leave, he would suddenly decide to do something else, like go to the bathroom. And I’d be like, ‘Come on, if we’re leaving, you should have handled that already,’” she recalled.
However, she acknowledged that over the years, Barack improved on this habit.
Barack Obama’s Friendship Style
In the second episode of her podcast, Michelle also discussed another habit of Barack’s that surprised her. She noted that while he spent hours with friends, their conversations often lacked deep emotional discussions.
“My husband would always ask, ‘What do you guys talk about for so long?’ He does not quite grasp the emotional layers that come with deep friendships,” she explained.
How Michelle Reacted to Barack’s Presidential Run
Michelle also shared how Barack’s decision to run for president initially caught her off guard. She admitted she did not believe he would go through with it and was hesitant about supporting his bid. However, her brother Craig played a key role in changing her mind.
“You were the one who made me see why I should back his campaign. And Barack, being as smart as he is, knew he had to go through you first to get me on board because, at first, I was like, ‘Absolutely not,’” she recalled.
Michelle also expressed gratitude to her brother for being her rock during their time in the White House.
“I would not have made it through eight years in the White House without my big brother by my side,” she said.

Michelle’s revelations come amid ongoing speculation about the state of her marriage to Barack. Rumors of a rift started when Barack attended President Trump’s inauguration alone, while other former presidents were accompanied by their spouses.
Michelle’s absence at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral also fueled speculation. The buzz intensified when Barack was spotted alone at a Clippers game in early March.
However, neither Michelle nor Barack has publicly addressed the divorce rumors.

Michelle and Barack Obama have previously shown support for former US Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid for the Oval Office.
Barack posted a video on X featuring a conversation between himself, Michelle, and Kamala, congratulating her on her decision to run. Michelle emphasized the historic significance of Kamala’s candidacy, highlighting that she could become the first woman president in US history.
