Met Dept Issues 7-Day Heavy Rainfall Warning Across Kenya(List)
On Monday, April 1st, the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a cautionary notice to residents of seven regions, alerting them to anticipate flooding during the upcoming week spanning from April 2nd to April 8th.
In an announcement, the department enumerated various areas, comprising the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Southeast Lowlands, Coast, North-eastern, and Northwestern regions.
Kenyan citizens were advised to exercise caution during this time to prevent the recurrence of fatalities and property damage witnessed in the previous week.
“Expect widespread rainfall across the country with heavy downpours forecasted in the above regions. Stay prepared for potential flooding in these areas,” read part of the statement from the department.
Furthermore, Kenya Met also alerted Kenyan citizens about abnormally elevated temperatures across 11 counties. The agency disclosed that daytime temperatures in these regions are expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius.
These counties include; Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale.

However, across much of the country, temperatures are expected to range from 20 to 30 degrees, with certain regions seeing temperatures dropping below 10 degrees.
Residents of these counties in Kenya were encouraged to stay well-hydrated, find shade, and refrain from prolonged sun exposure to mitigate the risk of heat-related ailments such as sunstroke, heat rash, and heat cramps.
The department issued a caution to Kenyans regarding the likelihood of balmy evenings in the upcoming week, specifically impacting two areas: the Coast and North Eastern regions.
“Ensure proper ventilation and use light bedding to stay comfortable during the warm nights,” read part of the statement.
Nighttime temperatures in these regions are forecasted to exceed 25 degrees.
Significantly, the climate across the nation has experienced fluctuations, characterized by periods of heavy rain alternating with sunny intervals since the start of the year. In February, the Kenya Meteorological Department cautioned Nairobi inhabitants about temperatures potentially reaching 31 degrees Celsius.
In the last week of March, property was destroyed, businesses disrupted and lives were lost after heavy rainfall was experienced in Nairobi and other counties.
