MCAs Demand Strike Over Ksh.10K Salary Boost

MCAs have given the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) one week to revise proposed changes to their salaries; otherwise, they will stop working.

The SRC announced in a circular on Wednesday that MCAs will receive Ksh.154,481 beginning the following month, up from Ksh.144,375.

The pay increase, which will be implemented in two phases, will also raise the salaries of County Assembly speakers to Ksh.562,312 from Ksh.525,525 in the current fiscal year, and to Ksh.601,674 in the fiscal year 2024/25.

Deputy Speakers will earn Ksh.231,722 per month beginning in July, up from Ksh.216,563; this figure is expected to increase to Ksh.247,943 in the 2024/25 fiscal year. Meanwhile, majority and minority leaders will earn Ksh.191,324 per month beginning in July and Ksh.204,717 per month in the next fiscal year.

MCAs oppose the proposed pay increase because it is unfair, as county speakers, deputy county speakers, and majority and minority leaders are primarily MCAs.

According to Philemon Sabulei, Chair of the County Assemblies Forum, and Elgeyo Marakwet, MCA, all 47 county assemblies will adjourn until the SRC revises the pay raise.

“County Assemblies were not involved in the review of salaries. It is void and invalid. The SRC must consider county assembly welfare. If our demands are not met, the County Assemblies will shut down, including stopping the passage of budgets. “We are giving them a week to respond, and 23 have already closed,” Sabulei said during a meeting of County assembly leaders on Saturday.

The speaker of the Makueni County Assembly added that compensation should begin with County Assembly members and not with speakers.
