Mbappe Named France Captain: Taking on New Leadership Role
After losing the World Cup final in December, Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris concluded his international career in January.
Kylian Mbappe accepted the offer to become captain of France.
This was following Hugo Lloris’ retirement.
According to AFP, Mbappe accepted the offer after earlier discussions with coach Didier Deschamps.

In an interview with L’Équipe, he confirmed his decision: “I’ve decided to end my international career with the feeling of having given everything.”

Further adding
“There comes a time when one must know how to pass the torch.
I have no desire to hold [the position]. I have always and repeatedly stated that the France team does not belong to anyone, and we must all ensure that this is the case, beginning with myself.”
Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid was named vice-captain after Raphael Varane of Manchester United hung up his boots following the December loss to Argentina.
Mbappe, 24, who has played 66 times for his country and scored a hat-trick in the 2018 World Cup final loss, had been heavily linked with the position for weeks.
The former Monaco attacker is PSG’s vice-captain behind Brazil’s Marquinhos and captained the team during Sunday’s loss to Rennes in the absence of the defender.
His first match as captain will be Friday’s Euro 2024 qualifier at the Stade de France against the Netherlands.
