Martha Karua Warns: Ruto’s Government on Borrowed Time After Raila Odinga’s Death

Kenya’s political landscape could be facing major turbulence following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, according to People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua. Speaking to TV47 on December 23, Karua warned that President William Ruto’s administration is at risk of instability without Odinga’s political influence.

“If there is someone heavily bereaved politically, it is Ruto. Without Baba’s presence, he will not get unified support. Even now, he is not so sure that he can make it another year,” Karua said, referring to Odinga by his widely recognized nickname, Baba.

Karua emphasized that Odinga’s absence will have significant implications for the upcoming 2027 General Elections, hinting that the President’s political trajectory was closely tied to his alignment with Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. According to her, potential shifts within ODM could disadvantage Ruto, especially given the ongoing divisions within the party regarding its relationship with the government.

The PLP leader also disclosed her final conversation with Odinga before his death. She said the former Prime Minister admitted feeling uneasy about his ties with Ruto’s administration. “I told him I don’t want an answer today, I’m leaving it with you to think, but he did say he was very uncomfortable,” Karua recalled. She added that she had encouraged Odinga to consider stepping away from the government, even if it meant its collapse.

Beyond electoral predictions, Karua accused President Ruto of exhibiting dictatorial tendencies and criticized the administration for allegedly failing to protect citizens detained in neighbouring countries. She also pointed to the November by-elections as a wake-up call for opposition parties, insisting that these events underscore the need for vigilance in challenging the ruling government.

Karua concluded her interview with a bold statement, asserting that Ruto is likely to serve only one term as president, signaling a potentially dramatic shift in Kenya’s political dynamics in the coming years.
