Mandera: Terrorist Bomb Attack Strikes Elwak Town, Casualties Confirmed

A possible terrorist attack occurred in Elwak Town, Mandera County, on Monday, April 29, resulting in several peopleย being seriously injured.

According to reports, the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was placed in the town’s central business area, close to the Administrative Police (AP) station.

Local businesses, such as banks, have declared they will shut down operations as security personnel begin their investigation into the incident and work to locate the individuals responsibly.

“We regret to informย you,ย that our Elwak Branch, Manderaย Countyย will remain closed today following an explosion in Elwak Town,” one of the banks reported.

“We confirm that our branch and the staff in Elwak are safe.”

Early accounts suggested intense gunfire exchanges between the police stationed in the area and alleged Al Shabaab terrorists.

The security officers have not yet determined how many people died in the explosion.

Witnesses reported that during the IED explosion, four people from outside the area and one residentย were killed.

Security officials verified the explosion, but they did not confirm the eyewitness’s report that five people, primarily from outside Mandera County, had died.

Early reports suggest that the improvised explosive device (IED)ย was aimedย at the residences of educators and healthcare professionals in the area.

Most tutors, healthcare professionals, and casual laborers in the region are not locals.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has previously encouraged residents in the North-Eastern region not to shield Al Shabaab militants.
