Man Arrested for Kidnapping Himself, Demands Ksh100,000 Ransom From Sister After Salary Loss to Betting

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) rescued a 25-year-old man on December 13 in Kitengela, who was allegedly involved in a self-abduction.

According to the DCI, the man reportedly staged his abduction after losing his November salary to gambling.

Upon his rescue, authorities discovered that the man had inflicted cuts on himself and later demanded a Ksh100,000 ransom from his sister.

The DCI stated that the man, assisted by an accomplice, orchestrated the scheme to extort money from his sister. The abduction was reported to the Kajiado Police Station.

The police were initially informed that the victim had been forcibly taken into a Toyota Probox by two men posing as good Samaritans offering a lift.

However, through their investigation, the DCI Crime Research and Operations Directorate tracked the man to Mutuku Lodgings in Kitengela.

Police discovered the man bound with rope, with his legs and arms tied and a bloody bandage placed over his mouth.

After his rescue, the man was questioned, revealing that the abduction was part of an extortion plot that he had coordinated with his accomplice.

During the rescue, officers seized Ksh10,100 in cash and the phone the man had used to communicate with his family.

Additionally, the DCI recovered a scalpel blade and bandages, which were used to create the illusion that his kidnappers were violent and ruthless.

The man has been arrested and is awaiting arraignment. Between June and November of this year, 57 cases of abductions and kidnappings were recorded, coinciding with political unrest and protests.

Betting is becoming a widespread issue, especially among youth aged 16-25, who are increasingly engaging in sports betting and online casino games.

Reports show that over 50% of the population participates in gambling, fueled by easy access to betting platforms and aggressive marketing tactics, including local celebrity endorsements.
