Makueni Schools Temporarily Closed After Dormitory Fires, Tragedy Follows Nyeri Blaze That Killed 17 Pupils

Following a tragic fire at Hillside Endarasha School in Nyeri, which resulted in the deaths of 17 pupils, two schools in Makueni County faced similar distressing events. On the same day, separate fires erupted in dormitories at Maiani High School and St. Peter Claver Secondary School—Kithuki, leading to their temporary closure.

Both fires, occurring at Maiani High School and St. Peter Claver Secondary School—Kithuki, damaged unspecified amounts of property.

A witness at St. Peter Claver Secondary School reported that the fire began while students were occupied with an entertainment session in one of the school’s halls.

Makueni County firefighting units were promptly dispatched to the sites of the fires.

Following the incident at St. Peter Claver Secondary School, two individuals have been arrested, and the police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fires.

The fire at Maiani High School ignited during the students’ evening classes. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported from either fire.

Both schools have since been closed as a precautionary measure.

These incidents in Makueni County occurred shortly after a devastating blaze at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County, which resulted in 17 pupils being burned beyond recognition.

The Ministry of Education has confirmed the tragedy and announced a joint investigation with the Ministry of Interior to determine the fire’s origin.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang reported that 14 pupils were severely injured and have been admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

“The Ministry of Education extends its deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the students who tragically lost their lives,” Kipsang stated.
