Makueni: Mystery 500kg Object From Sky Explained by Kenya Space Agency
Goverment has finally addressed the mystery surrounding a massive metallic object that fell from the sky in Mukuku, Makueni County, on Monday, December 31, last year.
Through the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), officials confirmed the object, a 2.5-meter-wide metallic ring weighing approximately 500 kg, originated from a space launch vehicle.
Social media had been rife with speculation about the incident, which occurred at around 3:00 PM in Mukuku Village, Mbooni East Sub-County. Preliminary investigations suggest the object was part of a rocket’s separation system.
KSA explained, โThe metallic ring is a fragment from a launch vehicle, typically designed to burn up during re-entry or land in uninhabited areas like oceans. This case is an exception and will be thoroughly investigated under international space law protocols.โ

On learning of the incident, KSA dispatched a team in collaboration with local authorities to secure the site and retrieve the debris for analysis. Concerns about residents freely handling the object have been addressed, with officials assuring the public that the material poses no immediate danger.
โOur experts will analyze the debris, identify its origin, and keep the public informed. We urge anyone encountering suspicious objects to report them promptly,โ KSA added.
Witnesses described the event as a loud bang heard kilometers away, followed by villagers rushing to inspect the fallen object. Images circulated online showed residents handling it without caution, unaware of potential risks.
The Kenya Space Agency thanked locals for their swift reporting and promised updates as investigations continue.
