Machogu Implements New School Dismissal Time: 3:45 PM

Friday, June 16th, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu issued an order mandating that school instruction begin at 8:00 am and end at 3:45 pm, inclusive of breaks.

In a statement, the CS instructed school administrators to ensure teaching accounts for six hours, noting that the allotted time is sufficient.

The timelines would also provide sufficient time for students to read independently and participate in extracurricular activities.

“The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Ezekiel Machogu, has instructed the heads of primary and secondary schools to ensure that classes begin at 8:00 am and end at 3:45 pm on weekdays.

The statement read in part, “Machogu stated that the Ministry provides for a maximum of six hours of instruction, noting that the education of students should be natural and not forced.”

The CS explained that several developed nations had fewer teaching hours but still met their objectives.

A portion of the statement read, “He stated that Finland has a 3-hour teaching schedule, despite its reputation for having a world-class educational system.”

Machogu issued the directive during a meeting with Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) representatives led by their chairman, Indimuli Kahi.

During the Friday meeting, principals voiced their concerns regarding the cost of school uniforms and the delay in the distribution of capitation funds.

Other complaints concerned the distribution of instructional materials, school uniforms, and the auditing of school finances.

Machogu assured the school principals that the Ministry would appoint a team to evaluate the issues raised and offer solutions.

Education PS Belio Kipsang, for his part, advocated for the principals’ association to self-regulate.
